Our planet is a time capsule with a 4.5 billion year history.

Geoscience opens this time capsule to read what’s written in the rock record, helping us to understand the past and prepare for the future.

Our researchers investigate many physical and chemical aspects of our planet and its history, ranging from early Earth processes to the formation and exploration for mineral and energy resources to the present-day climate and environment.

Earth structure and evolution

Our main areas of research include:

  • regional and planetary geology
  • tectonics and neotectonics
  • basin analysis (including biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy)
  • continental architecture
  • magmas and fluids
  • continental evolution (including geochronology and thermochonology).
Environmental Geoscience

Our main areas of research include:

  • marine environments and coral reef studies
  • ocean chemistry
  • coastal and estuarine processes.

Energy and Resources

Our main areas of research include:

  • hydrocarbon exploration
  • CO2 geo-sequestration
  • mineralising systems and ore petrology
  • resource assessment and predictive modeling
  • hydrogeology.
